“The Nine Scents of Sorrow” was April 8th’s episode of the podcast It’s Storytime with Wil Wheaton!
It’s Storytime is a weekly podcast featuring fantasy, scifi, and horror short fiction read by Wil Wheaton, of Stand by Me and Star Trek fame. He has since moved into voice acting, narrating audio books including Ready Player One. There’s a vast trove of incredible past episodes of the podcast, featuring lots of fellow SFF short fiction authors I know and love!
“The Nine Scents of Sorrow” originally appeared in Uncanny Magazine Issue 35, and is still available to read online if you prefer that format. The story follows a gender-fluid magical perfumer in Marie Antoinette’s court – one who maybe inadvertently sets off the French Revolution. Though it originally came out in 2020, its themes of quiet revolution, hope, and transformation still feel really relevant.
