The finalists for the 2021 World Fantasy Awards were announced last week, and I’m so shocked and excited to announce that my story “The Nine Scents of Sorrow” is a finalist for the Best Short Fiction award! “The Nine Scents of Sorrow” originally appeared in Issue 35 of Uncanny Magazine last year.

I’m among some truly outstanding company – in the short fiction category, last year I read and loved both Wiswell’s “Open House on Haunted Hill” and Triantafyllou‘s “My Country is a Ghost.” The novel and novella categories include other favorites like Piranesi, Mexican Gothic, and Flyaway.

One of the key themes of “The Nine Scents of Sorrow” is rebirth – our ability to take the broken pieces of something and use them to create something beautiful and new. Sorrow re-invents themself over and over, and in doing so, changes the world around them as well. This was a message I certainly needed over 2020, and I’m so happy to learn it resonated for others also.

The award winners will be announced this November at the 2021 World Fantasy Convention in Montreal.
